Are you a social services sector volunteer or employee on the Sunshine Coast looking to grow your ability to contribute in meaningful ways to your community? Do you want to learn how to be a leader in a style that aligns with your values and those of your organization? Would you like to develop your understanding of how non-profit organizations function to secure a new job or become more effective in your current role? If so, this microcredential is for you.

What is a microcredential?

A microcredential is a short, focused and competency-based course or program that, upon successful completion, entitles you to receive a digital badge that you can display on sites such as LinkedIn. It’s a verified proof of competency that demonstrates to employers that you have acquired skills in a particular area.

Who is this course for?

While the course is open to everyone, it will be particularly useful for:

  • Individuals wanting to obtain the skills and knowledge necessary for employment with social services agencies on the Sunshine Coast and elsewhere.
  • Current social services sector volunteers or entry-level employees wanting to develop foundational skills in business and leadership to become more effective in their current or future roles and impact meaningful change in their community.
  • Experienced social service sector managers, team leadersor board members who have extensive on-the-job experience, but little formal leadership training.

Course Details

  • Bootcamp format: Three 6-hour, in-person courses. There will be one hour for lunch.
  • Courses run on May 27, June 3 and June 10. Courses are held at the kálax-ay Capilano University campus in Sechelt, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Mixed-mode delivery: mixture of online (for assignments) and in-person learning sessions 
  • Bootcamp contains three modules: Understanding Yourself; Understanding Non-Profit Organizations and Understanding Others
  • Required weekly classes, readings and assignments
  • Computer and internet access required
  • English language proficiency required
  • Citizen Leaders: Growing the Community from Within digital badge issued by Capilano University Continuing Studies upon successful completion of bootcamp (non-credit course)
  • Tuition = $294 ($280 tuition + GST)

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course (three modules), you will be able to:

Module 1: Understanding Yourself (Reflection) 

  • Illustrate the components of your personal story which brings you to community-engaged work 
  • Identify the values, assumptions and beliefs you hold about being an effective leader
  • Describe your personal leadership style and how it is influenced by their experiences, goals, values, and identities

Module 2: Understanding Non-Profit Organizations (Context) 

  • Differentiate between asset-based and deficit-focused community development
  • Compare problem-solving to Appreciative Inquiry models for change
  • Demonstrate understanding of common non-profit structures, processes and people, including the Board of Directors, decision-making frameworks, and change processes 
  • Describe the meaning, importance and impact of organizational culture 
  • Explore and summarize ways to decolonize and Indigenize workplaces

Module 3: Understanding Others (Action) 

  • Communicate effectively using written and spoken word, non-verbal language, electronic tools, and listening skills to develop relationships, motivate others, ensure confidentiality, manage conflicts, and represent organizations
  • Describe the meanings, causes and types of social inequity, power and privilege, and unconscious bias and ways to reduce or eliminate their negative impacts on people and organizations
  • Utilize methods to foster diversity, belonging, equity and inclusion to create a culture of empowerment, respect and creative collaboration and action 

Technical Requirements

  • Access to a computer with high-speed internet
  • Basic computer skills 

Instructors and Advisors

The instructors and advisors for the course are all social services sector professionals with proven expertise and years of experience working for non-profit organizations on the Sunshine Coast and elsewhere.

  • Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis, and the maximum class size is 25 students, so be sure to apply as soon as you can.
